9 Tips to Ease Car Sickness

December 5th, 2022 by

Car sickness happens to most people at some point in their lives. Certain groups will be more prone to experiencing nausea and/or dizziness while traveling, including kids sitting in the backseat, pregnant people, and those prone to migraines. While there are certain supplements or medications that can be tried to reduce motion sickness, the local Dodge, Ram, and Jeep dealer in Long Island, New York recommends starting with these simple lifestyle changes first.

1. Change Positions

Changing positions may help ease car sickness symptoms before they become severe. Some may find that lying down or reclining will help, or taking a quick rest stop to stand up for a little while may help.

2. Take a Turn Driving

Passengers are most likely to experience car sickness, so if an adult passenger starts to experience symptoms, consider having them take the wheel. Motion sickness occurs when the movement the eyes see is different from the movement sensed by the inner ear senses. Driving a car may help these senses connect better since the driver is in control of the movement.

3. Sit Up Front

Facing the direction one is traveling reduces motion sickness. If driving is not an option, sitting in the front seat is the next best way to connect your visual sense and inner ear. Remember to check the local age and weight requirements for sitting in the front passenger seat.

4. Look at the Horizon

Focusing on a stationary object in the distance helps with visual stimulus. It may be most helpful to sit up front or sit next to the window where one can continually look towards the horizon.

5. Get Fresh Air

Cracking a window or stopping to get some fresh air may help with motion sickness. If the weather is bad or the car is traveling too quickly on a highway, try turning the air vents toward the motion sick passenger, or using a fan to blow air on their face.

6. Eat a Light Snack

Having some saltine crackers or a light snack may ease nausea. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that will sit in the stomach and make things worse.

7. Drink Something

Taking a sip of cold water or a carbonated beverage could help ease nausea. Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee and certain sodas that may worsen symptoms.

8. Distract Yourself

Once the passenger has tried a few other methods to reduce their motion sickness symptoms, try distracting them with music or conversation to take their mind off how they are feeling in the moment. Make sure to have good hands-free infotainment set up for premium entertainment. Consider having an upgraded system installed or purchasing a newer vehicle from the local Dodge RAM dealer in New York.

9. Don’t Look at Books or Screens

Most people like to keep themselves entertained on long road trips by reading or looking at devices. But focusing on something up close can make symptoms worse. Try taking a break from the activity by switching to listening to an audiobook or music.

Even when these measures are taken, someone could still get car sick. It is a good idea to keep a durable bag/bucket, disinfecting wipes, and hand sanitizer in your vehicle just in case.

Visit a Jeep, Dodge, and RAM dealer in New York to browse new and used vehicles, have a current vehicle serviced, or order special parts and accessories.
